OLG Writers to Publish Short Stories

Third and fourth grade students meet every Wednesday during lunch.  We are working on creative writing with the goal of publishing our short stories on our website.

Students in our weekly writers’ group have been busy discussing characterization, plot and setting.                   Here is the beginning of a story, written by Madison, one of our third graders.

The Magical Time-Turning Car

By: Madison

There lived two kids, brother and sister, and they liked each other a lot.  They always stuck together.  Their names were Eddie and Heather.  Eddie was six and Heather was 8.  Heather had long strawberry blonde hair, clear blue eyes, and was always happy and smiling.  Eddie was short.  He had long (ear length), light brown hair.  His eyes were greenish-hazel.

One day Eddie came to Heather.  “Can we be adventurers?” He asked.

“Do you know what Eddie?  That’s a great idea.  We could find a bunch of different stuff.”

So the next day they packed bags full of flashlights, notebooks, and research guides.  They even made badges that read: ADVENTURERS.  So they told their mom they were going out.

“Yes, but stay in Gettysburg!” she replied.

Gettysburg was the town they lived in, and it was quite large.

“We promise!” they said.

“What are the packs and badges for?” their mom said.

“Mom!” said Eddie sounding annoyed.  “Didn’t you read them?”

“Come closer, I can’t see.”

“OK, but hurry we have to go,” said Eddie.

After their mom had asked a bunch of questions, they set out on their journey.  They found so many things.  Cans, paper, sticks, leaves, but nothing good.

“This is getting boring.  We’re not finding anything good.  Maybe being adventurers isn’t such a great idea after all,” said Eddie.

“Well, maybe we’re not lookin’ hard enough.  We’ll look somewhere else,” said Heather, and she was sounding confident.

“Alright,” said Eddie.  “Let’s go.”

They walked down the street.  They came to a small creek.  There was a very small stream, and a wooden board for a little bridge.  They walked farther back.  And after a  while, they came into a clearing with a field, and in the middle of the field was a car.  A very old car.

“Should we check it out?” asked Heather, sounding nervous.

“S-s-sure,” said Eddie, sounding scared, for the car looked a little bit haunted

They approached the car slowly.  They weren’t going to drive, so Heather sat in the driver’s seat and Eddie sat next to her.  It wasn’t a normal car.  There were so many buttons.

“Should we push one of them?” asked Eddie.

“Right,” Heather replied.

“Which one should we push?” said Eddie.

“I don’t know.  I’ll just keep pushing them until we find the right one,” she replied nervously.  She pushed the first one.  Nothing happened.

“Hmmm?” said Eddie.

She pushed the second one.  Still nothing happened.  “Funny,” said Heather.

“Yeah,” said Eddie.  “That’s weird.”

She pushed the third button.  An awkward voice echoed around the car.

“I am a car.  The oldest car on earth.  I am a magical time-turning car.  I was made 100,000 years ago by two other kids, Jack and Henry.  I have five hours until I will die.  If you help me turn new again, I will not die, Eddie and Heather.”

“Woah!” Said Eddie, sounding like it was awesome.  “She…”

“I am a boy!!!” Yelled the car.

“….knows our names,” Eddie finished

“I wonder how he knows our names.  Oh, Eddie, he said, magical time-turning car,” said Heather anxiously.

“Alright, are you gonna’ help me or not?”

“Yeah, alright,” said Eddie.

“Wait…,” said Heather.

“Find the paint, new tires, windshield wipers and the engine,” instructed the car.

“Wow! The whole engine?  How’re we gonna’ carry it?” said Eddie.

“I’ll help you with my magic,” said the car dreamily.  “Are you ready to go back in time?”

“Yeah, alright,” said Eddie, like it was nothing.

Heather didn’t look ready.  “I guess,” she said.

“Oh, I forgot.  Get a new steering wheel, too.  Turn the steering wheel to the left,” said the car.

Heather turned the steering wheel left.  Immediately, the car slowly lifted from the ground.  It was spinning faster and faster.  They felt the car driving quickly through the air.

.  They realized it was going backward and heard ticking coming from the old tires.  Now the car was getting faster.  Then all of a sudden THUD.  They had come to a stop right in the middle of a railroad track.  They heard the whistle of a train.

“Oh, no!” said Eddie.  “We have to get out of here.”

            “Yeah,” said Heather.

They saw a train in the distance.

            “Car, wake up,” shouted Eddie.

“Eddie, it’s not sleeping,” said Heather cooly.

“Why don’t you sound scared?”

“Because the car said he would help us.”

“Ah,” said Eddie.  All of a sudden, the train came near.

“What do we do now?” said Eddie.  Then the train drove right through the car.  Heather heard the steering wheel unscrew from the train.  The steering wheel hit her lap.

“One down!” said Heather.  They had a new steering wheel.

“A hundred…thousand…more to go,” said Eddie awkwardly.

But Heather looked at the steering wheel.  It looked no different from the car’s.  Then it started transforming into a smooth, clean steering wheel.

“Yay!” said Eddie.  “That was easy.”

“Ah…ah…aha.  It’s gonna’ get harder,” said Heather.

“Very good!” said the car.

“Uh…we didn’t do anything.”

“Yes you didn’t do anything, Eddie, but Heather what nice work you did.”

“Hey, what did she do?” said Eddie unfairly.

“It was her confidence that helped,” said the car.

What will the adventurers find?  Tune in soon to find out, as Madison continues her story.

Here is a portion of Vijay’s story…

The witch had another issue.  She wanted to rule all by herself.  Her idea was a potion that could turn you into anything.  She went around the world to gather some ingredients.  When she got all of her ingredients, she mixed them up.  In a minute her potion was done.  But wait! She had to test it first.  She called her assistant.  “I need to test this potion,” she said to the hunchback.

“Yes, madam,” he said.

Suddenly, the witch saw something.  A little head popped up.  “Hunchback, go see who is there.”

“Yes, madam,” he said. As he walked through the unknown, he saw a servant.  The humble servant.  He asked him, “What are you doing here?”

He said, “I’ve come here to see what you’re doing.  So what are you doing?”

What will happen next?  Stay tuned.

Stuck With Mr. Sun

As I sit here and stare

I see the kids having fun

and playing in the hot sun.

I wish I was out there

breathing in the fresh air.

I’d rather be having fun

than sitting with my teacher Mr. Sun,

the evil one.

Just look at me.

Look at my injuries
